Mae'r etholaeth hon yn nodedig, efallai, am y ffaith mai ychydig iawn o ddynion o'r tu allan i'r sir sydd wedi cynrychioli'r etholaeth. Serch hynny, Thomas Bulkeley o Ddinas oedd yr unig un heblaw am nifer o deulu Glynllifon i ddod o Uwchgwyrfai.

Y cyntaf o'r "dynion diarth" i fod yn AS dros y sir oedd Henry Lawrence, Sais a ddaliai swydd Arglwydd Lywydd y Cyngor, sef llywydd y Cyngor Cyfrin, dan Cromwell. Camodd i fewn i'r sedd wedi i Syr John Glynn gael ei ethol dros Sir Gaernarfon a Sir y Fflint yn yr un etholiad (gan ddewis eistedd dros Sir y Fflint), ac wedyn cael ei ddyrchafu i'r hyn a gyfatebodd i Dŷ'r Arglwyddi dan Cromwell, sef y Tŷ Arall ym 1656. Roedd gan Lawrence ddewis o gael ei benodi yn aelod dros Swydd Huntingdon neu Sir Gaernarfon ac fe ddewisodd ein sir ni. Nid yw'r rheswm yn hysbys, ond efallai bod anhawster i gael hyd i aelod o statws a dylanwad digonol ymysg bonheddwyr Sir Gaernarfon, gan fod cymaint ohonynt yn elyniaethus i Cromwell ac wedi cefnogi'r brenin Siarl I.

Ni chafodd yr un "dyn diarth" heb gysylltiadau o ran deulu neu dir ei ethol hyd nes i William Rathbone, banciwr a cyn-AS o Lerpwl ennill y sedd ym 1880. Roedd hyd yn oed ei ragflaenydd, Watkin Williams, cyfreithiwr o Sir Ddinbych, wedi priodi merch Plas-yn-Llysfaen, ac y pryd hynny, roedd Llysfaen yn perthyn i Sir Gaernarfon, fel ynys o fewn ffiniau Sir Ddinbych.

Mae'n wir i ddeud fod Robert Jones, y Llafurwr cyntaf (a'r gwerinwr cyntaf) i ddal y sedd, yn dod o Flaenau Ffestiniog, ond ei ysgogydd o oedd R. Silyn Roberts. Gŵr o Aberystwyth oedd Goronwy Owen, ond mi daflodd ei hun i fewn i fywyd Sir Gaernarfon, gan ddod yn gynghorydd sir ac yn henadur.

Am yr holl gyfnod o sefydlu'r drefn o siroedd Cymru'n anfon aelod seneddol i San Steffan ym 1542, hyd 1885, Sir Gaernarfon oedd yr etholaeth a gynhwysai Uwchgwyrfai yn ei gyfanrwydd. Sir Gaernarfon oedd enw'r etholaeth eto rhwng 1918 a 1950. Rhwng 1885 a 1918, Eifion, sef hanner y sir, oedd yr etholaeth. Yn etholaeth 1929,safodd ymgeisydd seneddol cyntaf Plaid Cymru yn yr etholaeth hon, gan ennill 609 pleidlais.

Un aelod a etholwyd gan etholwyr Sir Gaernarfon, heblaw am gyfnod Cromwell yn y 1650au, pan etholwyd dau aelod dros yr etholaeth.

Mae'r etholaeth hon yn nodedig, efallai, am y ffaith mai ychydig iawn o ddynion o'r tu allan i'r sir sydd wedi cynrychioli'r etholaeth. Serch hynny, Thomas Bulkeley o Ddinas oedd yr unig un heblaw am nifer o deulu Glynllifon i ddod o Uwchgwyrfai.

Roedd gan Lawrence ddewis o gael ei benodi yn aelod dros Swydd Huntingdon neu Sir Gaernarfon ac fe ddewisodd ein sir ni.[1] Nid yw'r rheswm yn hysbys, ond efallai bod anhawster i gael hyd i aelod o statws a dylanwad digonol ymysg bonheddwyr Sir Gaernarfon, gan fod cymaint ohonynt yn elyniaethus i Cromwell ac wedi cefnogi'r brenin Siarl I.

Ni chafodd yr un "dyn diarth" heb gysylltiadau o ran deulu neu dir ei ethol hyd nes i William Rathbone, banciwr a cyn-AS o Lerpwl ennill y sedd ym 1880. Roedd hyd yn oed ei ragflaenydd, Watkin Williams, cyfreithiwr o Sir Ddinbych, wedi priodi merch Plas-yn-Llysfaen, ac y pryd hynny, roedd Llysfaen yn perthyn i Sir Gaernarfon, fel ynys o fewn ffiniau Sir Ddinbych.[2]

Mae'n wir i ddeud fod Robert Jones, y Llafurwr cyntaf (a'r gwerinwr cyntaf) i ddal y sedd, yn dod o Flaenau Ffestiniog, ond ei ysgogydd o oedd R. Silyn Roberts.[3] Gŵr o Aberystwyth oedd Goronwy Owen, ond mi daflodd ei hun i fewn i fywyd Sir Gaernarfon, gan ddod yn gynghorydd sir ac yn henadur.[4]
